Traditional dancing, crafts, and teachings were all part of the Riverwood Indigenous Social
MISSISSAUGA, ON, September 25, 2023 – The Riverwood Indigenous Social, an annual celebration of Indigenous culture, took place on Saturday at Riverwood Park in Mississauga. The free event was open to all and gave attendees the opportunity to learn about Indigenous traditions and heritage with the goal of fostering positive relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
Jingtamok featured teachings from Elder Garry Sault of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, drumming from Eagleheart Big Drum, traditional arts and crafts, a variety of dance styles, and presentations on the history and cultural importance of Indigenous dance and regalia.
“Each year, we look forward to providing a welcoming, informative, and fun atmosphere for the community at Jingtamok,” said Sara Wilbur-Collins, Executive Director of the Riverwood Conservancy. “We remain committed to advancing the goals of truth and reconciliation, not just through this annual event, but throughout the year in the programs that we offer in collaboration with our local Indigenous partners, who we are honoured to support.”
Jingtamok was organized by Indigenous community members and staff from the Indigenous Network and supported by staff and volunteers from The Riverwood Conservancy.
Financial support from the Hazel McCallion Arts, Culture and Heritage Funds at the Community Foundation of Mississauga, a registered charitable public foundation serving the people of Mississauga, made Jingtamok possible.
