Calling all citizen scientists!
Saturday, July 20, 2024
7:00 am – 11:00 pm
Within Riverwood's Boundaries

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who took part in our 2024 Summer BioBlitz! Our citizen science community of 48 observers recorded 2,468 observations and 597 species!

Our prize winners are:

  • Most Species Observations: Terry Bullen (terryfic on iNaturalist) with 341 observations of 233 species
  • Best Photograph: Terence Gui (tezster on iNaturalist) with this shot of a bold jumping spider
  • Randomly Selected Participant: Harmeet Singh (s_harmeet on iNaturalist)

Become a citizen scientist by joining our 2nd annual day-long Summer BioBlitz! We are aiming to grow our knowledge of Riverwood’s plants and animals, and the impact that urbanization has on their populations. All ages and levels of nature knowledge are welcome at our BioBlitz!

We’ll have guided walks throughout the day, but you’re also encouraged to explore the park on your own throughout the day to spot plant and animal species for the BioBlitz. The more you contribute to the BioBlitz, the better your chances of winning great prizes!

Important Information

The BioBlitz runs from 7:00 am – 11:00 pm within Riverwood’s park boundaries.

Please remain on trails and leave no trace. Do not leave trails to take images. Only submit images of natural plants and animals; no photos of cultivated plants or domestic pets.

Create a free account on iNaturalist to submit images via the app on Android or Apple devices, or upload them to the website on your computer later. Photos must be taken within Riverwood’s boundaries between 7:00 am and 11:00 pm on July 20, 2024 only. The GPS coordinates of your phone or camera and the time and date of your photos will automatically link to our project when you upload images to iNaturalist. Upload as you go or all at once when you get home. Images must be submitted on iNaturalist by July 23 for a chance to win prizes.

Prizes!

We’re giving away some sweet prizes to BioBlitz participants!

  1. Most species observed – Vortex Triumph Binoculars
  2. Randomly selected participant – Vortex Triumph Binoculars
  3. Best Photograph (as voted on by our committee of volunteers) – Armstrong Bird Feeder Starter Kit and a copy of Dave Taylor’s book, North American Survivors.
