One of Riverwood’s earliest champions, Charlie Brown, passed away on May 28. He was 93.
Charlie’s work with Riverwood dates back to 1985, when he and other horticulturalists founded the Mississauga Garden Council to design and establish a garden park at our 150-acre urban nature preserve. Charlie would go on to serve as a volunteer Board Member and President of the Board of Directors for The Riverwood Conservancy.
Charlie was the recipient of many accolades for his work, including the 2021 June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism. More recently, in December 2022 The Riverwood Conservancy’s Board of Directors presented Charlie with a plaque to recognize the end of his term on his last TRC Committee earlier in the year. During that presentation, TRC Chair, Heather Shaw, said, “We are so happy to take this opportunity to say thank you, as a Founder and Chair for many years, giving hours of work and volunteer commitment. The organization is what it is today, in no small part, because of all your work.”
We are grateful to Charlie’s family, which has asked that donations in his memory be made to The Riverwood Conservancy so that flowers can continue to bloom in the gardens. All of us appreciate his years of dedication to the community, our gardens and natural areas, and the wider environment.
