The Riverwood Conservancy will adapt public spaces and programming for more inclusive access to nature
MISSISSAUGA, June 25, 2021 – A grant of $56,000 from the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative will support The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC) in its plans to expand nature-based learning and wellness opportunities to residents of Mississauga and beyond.
The funding will allow TRC to revitalize nature trails and signage at Riverwood, enable remote internet connectivity for program instructors and participants from anywhere in the park, and purchase an all-terrain wheelchair. Nature-based programs for children, youth, older adults, and persons with disabilities will be adapted to enable safe in-person and virtual delivery through COVID-19 restrictions and beyond.
Reflecting TRC’s service to Mississauga’s diverse communities, the organization will deliver programs that enable newcomers to Canada to connect with nature, and activities to coincide with Black Birders Week in 2022.
“The Canada Healthy Communities Initiative will make a huge difference in ensuring our natural space remains a safe and vibrant place for the public,” said Sara Wilbur-Collins, Executive Director of The Riverwood Conservancy. “As members of our community continue to face the challenges of COVID-19, being able to connect to nature at Riverwood is critical to supporting their mental and physical health.”
The Healthy Communities Initiative is a $31 million investment from the Government of Canada to support communities as they create and adapt public spaces to respond to the new realities of COVID-19.
