Meet a TRC volunteer: Balmiki
We asked one of our dedicated volunteers, Balmiki Kumar, to share his thoughts on his service to The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC). Balmiki’s answers to our questions are below.
When did you first start volunteering with TRC?
I came across an advertisement for a volunteering role with the Junior Naturalist Club at TRC via an email I received from a professor at University of Toronto Mississauga, Marc Johnson. This opportunity provided a delightful escape into nature and offered a profound sense of fulfillment through community involvement. Since then, participating in numerous sessions of the Junior Naturalists Club, and Mini Naturalists Club, has been a source of immense joy. Witnessing how the programs nurture young naturalists’ love and respect for nature has been truly rewarding.
What led you to first volunteer with TRC?
Every day on my route to UTM, as I passed by Riverwood, I couldn’t help but appreciate its beauty. Being in such close proximity to this serene and beautiful place was truly a blessing. Whenever I had a spare moment, I would take a walk through Riverwood with a friend of mine. The tranquility and happiness I found in the park helped rejuvenate my focus and energy. Although I wasn’t initially aware of TRC’s volunteer opportunities, I had been actively seeking local volunteering opportunities.
What volunteer work have you done in the time you’ve been with us?
Since the start of my volunteering work with TRC, I’ve been extremely fortunate to engage in a multitude of activities beyond the Junior Naturalist Club. These include tasks such as office administration, archiving, assisting with event-day setup for Jingtamok, and designing infographics a recent volunteer survey report.
Why does volunteering with TRC matter to you?
TRC unites a diverse group of individuals dedicated to conserving natural areas, and educating the public about the importance of local flora and fauna. Additionally, the team at TRC is incredibly warm and welcoming, fostering an enjoyable work atmosphere for everyone involved. TRC feels like a second family. It's deeply gratifying to contribute to TRC's mission of preserving and nurturing the abundant natural beauty that Riverwood holds.
How does volunteering with TRC make you feel?
Volunteering at TRC has proven to be an incredibly fulfilling journey for me, deepening my connection with nature and significantly enhancing my mental well-being. Plus, the supportive and appreciative environment at TRC is truly humbling, leaving me feeling incredibly fortunate to be part of such a welcoming community.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about volunteering with TRC?
For those considering volunteering at TRC, I want to emphasize the wide range of opportunities available. At TRC, not only will you receive support from staff and other volunteers, but your contributions will be genuinely appreciated. The organization maintains high professional standards to ensure volunteers' safety and is receptive to constructive feedback to enhance the volunteer experience. There are numerous ways to contribute to Riverwood, including bird feeding, gardening, natural education, participation in special events, conservation efforts, and many more, so find what feels right for you!
