Bark and Buds: Winter Tree ID

There may be no leaves, but that won’t stop us! Bark, buds, and branches are all we need! Come enjoy a walk in the woods and learn how to identify trees in winter!

Important Information

Dress for the weather. This is a rain, snow, or shine event unless severe weather is in the forecast. Consider bringing good winter boots, crampons/boot spikes, or a walking stick.

No dogs permitted.

Difficulty Rating

Easy. This program will remain on the top terrace of Riverwood using the fairly flat trail system. Dependent on conditions, the trails may become icy or snow-covered, we will modify based on safety.

Cancellations and Refunds

Refunds may only be processed if a registration is cancelled five or more business days before event day. Advanced cancellations are subject to administrative fees. No refunds will be given for no-shows. For programs where the fee is $19.99 or less, no refunds will be issued due to processing fees. If the program is cancelled due to weather, illness, or minimum participants not registered, we will attempt to reschedule, or a full refund will be issued based on the circumstances of the cancellation.

About the Presenters

Derek Stone is a lifelong naturalist and wildlife enthusiast, who pursued his degree in Environmental Studies and Resource Management at Trent University with a focus on ecology and public policy. Since then, Derek has engaged in multiple positions that focus on monitoring and restoring degraded environments, and enthusiastically engaging the public with nature. As The Riverwood Conservancy’s Conservation and Program Manager, Derek focuses on creating strong connections between nature and people, and embracing those connections to support both our environment and our community.

Taya Kehler combined her passions for horticulture and design while completing her degree in Landscape Architecture at Dalhousie University. Her goal is to enhance gardens with eco-friendly practices and year-round interest to encourage pollinators and welcome visitors to Riverwood.
